The European Challenge Cup is supposed to incorporate all of the professional clubs from around Europe, but the champions of the Russian Super League are missing from the competition. Is this because of the difference in seasons? It seems strange that ‘Bucuresti’, who are not even a club, but a collection of young players from clubs around Romania are included in the European rugby club competition, but the none of the clubs from the Russian league are. Thoughts?

I think neither money nor schedule problems can be real excuses for Russian clubs not playing in european competitions. I think it’s a lack of relationship and desire to do something to promote your club. For russian rugby officials it’s much easier to make a small championship here where only 4 clubs really compete in an awkward atmosphere of mutual accusations of unfair shuffling than to fight for a place in Europe. I personally think that it would be a big step forward if someday some russian club would play in ECC

As far as I know, this topic is being discussed betwee RUR, Russian Professional league, and European authoritities.
To have a new champion in Eastern part of the country will certainly help… 🙂

    Петр,

That is exactly what I was thinking. To have a champion from Moscow is great where the ECC is concerned. Could VVA emulate some of the Russian football clubs and start signing some foreign players?

I am myself promoting the idea and searching interested players in France.

Note that VVA has two very good Moldovans — the star wing Katrutse and a good prop.

Enisey-STM used at the end of the season three players from the French championship: veteran Russian Sergueev, a Fench — Durand, a Georgian — Khamashuridze, and a south african prop.

A good signing for a Russian club would be Martin Kafka, the flyhalf from the Czech Republic. He was playing in Japan, but is now back home playing for a Czech club.

I hope the Russian clubs will sign more Islanders, New Zealanders, and Argentinan players. The melting pot is very interesting in France.

I have only vague idea about the level of salaries in Russian pro clubs, but I suspect it is not enough to attract talented players from «developed» rugby nations. Maybe someone knows better (Petr?) but I heard the sum of 3000 US dollars per month mentioned somewhere. For someone to come half way around the world to a strange country to play a sport professionally this will not be enough.

It’s much more than only $3000; in fact the actual level of salary safely prevents best Russian professionals to expatriate in Europe (primarily France and Italy).

In turn, the existence of another professional «pole of attraction» in Europe (with UK, France and Italy) with a good level of competition and visibilty for the national teams’ responsibles maty be very positive for European «3d tier» countries.

Clearly, a regional club competition is not actual anymore, the best clubs should be able to measure themselves against the likes of those playing in Challenge Cup.

An «over-production» of good young players in «traditional» rugby countries (those having a good level of play but no chance to succeed in top professional teams) may provide another way to reinforce the level of Russian teams but integrating the best players from this population.

So, can we imagine to see young french and english player loan to Russian clubs ?

As you said, 3rd Tier nations could benefit very well from the championship. Players from Germany, Czechia, Poland, Ukraine, Georgia, even Uruguay and Chile can improve the average level of play in Russia.

No mean that the players from 3d tier will actually omprove the level of the championship, but it will give them opportunities to evolve in a professional environment and progress, and will provide better choice for Russian clubs.

More 3000 $ only for period of the championship (sponsor’s money). The championship of this year only 4 months (!) Somebody will arrive to play only for 4 months? Therefore has not arrived into VVA Cosmin Ratiu.

I couldn’t find any clear guidance on the eligibily rules and tournament entry procedure for new teams. The ECC website http://www.europeanchallengecup.com/ says only the following:

«20 top flight teams from six countries compete in five Pools of four teams each.

The 20 teams in the 2005/6 tournament are made up of:

    France 7 teams
    England 6 teams
    Italy 4 teams
    Ireland 1 team
    Scotland 1 team
    Romania 1 team»

Let’s say hypothetically that the Russian champion club wants to play in the ECC — how would they be able to join? Do they have to petition to the tournament managers or something like that? Would the ECC managers be willing to increase the number of teams from the current 20 or will some of the top nations have to decrease the number of clubs they enter to keep the pool system the same?
